BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

RAMON MARTÍ I ALSINA (Barcelona, 1826–1894).
“Young Peasant Girl.”
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 88 × 52 cm; 111 × 75 cm (frame).

This portrait of a woman highlights a particularly significant aspect of Ramon Martí i Alsina’s work: his direct and non-idealized approach to the human figure. He explored a wide range of pictorial genres and applied to portraiture and figure scenes the principles of observing life from nature that made him a key figure in the establishment of Realism in Catalonia.

The young woman, depicted in a half-length portrait and turned slightly toward the viewer, wears traditional folk attire characterized by the red scarf covering her hair, the fitted bodice, and the wide piece of dark lace fabric held in her hands. These elements lend chromatic and textural richness to the composition, yet they do not detract from the main focus: the model’s individual presence, whose sidelong glance and reserved expression avoid the affectation typical of idealized portraiture. The work’s appeal also lies in the combination of portraiture and the depiction of folk types, a field ideally suited to Martí Alsina’s realist sensibility.

Ramon Martí i Alsina was the leading proponent of pictorial realism in Catalonia and exerted a decisive influence on several generations of artists. His interest in painting from life, strengthened by his firsthand knowledge of French Realism, was evident in his landscapes as well as in his portraits and figure studies, all characterized by a non-idealized observation of the model. He was a professor at the Escuela de la Lonja and a mentor to painters such as Modest Urgell, Joaquim Vayreda, and Francesc Torrescassana. His work is represented in the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya and the Museo Nacional del Prado.
