DESCRIPTION

EMILIO GRAU SALA (Barcelona, 1911 - Sitges, Barcelona, 1975).
"Flors".
Oil on canvas.
Signed.
Attached guarantee certificate issued by Gemma Gimeno Art Gallery.
Work exhibited at the gallery's stand at the Salon d'Anticuarios de Barcelona, 2006.
Measurements: 55 × 33 cm; 77 × 54 cm (frame).

Floral composition of intense chromatic vitality, where the motif of the vase becomes a celebration of light, color and pictorial matter. The flowers, resolved with free and vibrant brushstrokes, expand on a background of blues, greens, pinks and reds, generating a cheerful, decorative and deeply luminous image.

The work links with the refined and hedonistic sensibility characteristic of Grau Sala, marked by a taste for interiors, still lifes, female figures and scenes of elegant ambience. More than a botanical description, the artist offers a poetic vision of the floral still life, in which color acts as the true protagonist.

Grau Sala developed a large part of his career in Paris, where he achieved notable international recognition and actively participated in the artistic environment of the French capital.

In the French capital he became acquainted with the avant-garde, although he maintained a colorist figuration close to impressionism and fauvism, linked to the spirit of Bonnard and Vuillard. He achieved great international recognition, exhibiting in Barcelona, Paris, New York, London and Los Angeles, and also working in graphic work and scenography.

His work is preserved in institutions such as the Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña, the Museo Esteban Vicente and the Instituto Óscar Domínguez de Arte y Cultura Contemporánea.
