Royal Doulton is an English manufacturer of pottery and home accessories founded in 1815. It always made some more decorative wares, although initially mostly stoneware, and from the 1860s onwards the firm made considerable efforts to build a reputation in the design field, in which it was highly successful, as one of the first British manufacturers of art pottery.
Kingsware was developed by Charles Noke and produced between 1898 and 1939. No other factory in the world has been able to recreate the same lustrous finish, making Kingsware a unique and highly coveted collector's item. The rich brown effects of the Kingsware glaze were achieved by painting the design in the colored slip inside the plaster of Paris mold, then the dark terra cotta slip was added to form the body. The transparent glaze was then fired over the finished piece, giving depth to the lower colors.
The images in each lot are the actual images of the object and are therefore part of the cataloging.
