BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Stature of mummiform Osiris; Egypt, low period, 664- 332 B.C.
Bronze.
Measurements: 13 x 3 0,5 cm; 2 x 4 cm (base).
Statuette amulet of Osiris moniform, represented with the attributes of the performer. A crown atef, with ostrich feathers, the whip (mayal or nenej) and the scepter uas. These are the most characteristic iconographic attributes of this deity, representing the power and authority of Osiris as king of the gods and supreme authority of the earth and crops. Osiris is the Egyptian god of resurrection, related to fertility and regeneration of the Nile, protector of vegetation and agriculture. He also presides over the court of judgment of the dead, and is in fact closely related to the Afterlife. He is usually represented mummified, with the attributes of royalty: crown Atef, hela staff and whip nejej or scepter uas, as we see here. Osiris was considered the firstborn son of Geb, divinity of the earth, and the goddess Nut, representation of the sky. He was therefore brother and husband of Isis, with whom he had a posthumous son, Horus. We find him for the first time in the sources of the V dynasty, although it is most likely that he was worshipped long before. In fact, we find the epithet Khenti-Amentiu ("leader of the Orientals", alluding to his role as king of the Beyond) already used in the I dynasty, both in relation to the divinity and as a pharaonic title. The most valuable information about Osiris is found in the Pyramid Texts of the late V dynasty, the Shabaka Stone of the New Empire and, much later, in the texts of Greek writers such as Plutarch or Diodorus. Osiris was considered not only a merciful judge, but also the protector of the underworld, thus the guarantor of the birth of vegetation and the flooding of the Nile. Also, in connection with his myth of rebirth after death, Osiris began to be associated with natural cycles, especially those related to agriculture.
