Very early work of the artist's work Work of quick and imposing brushstroke in which the artist gives great prominence to color and light. Creating in the composition a play of light and shadow that manages to contextualize the viewer in that orientalist atmosphere. Known as "The great painter of the Protectorate" or "The painter of Morocco", Mariano Bertuchi is known for his pictorial style, orientalism that was born in the nineteenth century as a consequence of the romantic spirit of flight in time and space. During the second half of the 19th century, however, many of the painters who traveled to the Middle East in search of this invented reality discovered a different and new country, which stood out with its peculiarities above the clichés and prejudices of Europeans. Thus, this new orientalist school leaves behind the beautiful odalisques, the harems and the slave markets to paint nothing more than what they see, the real East in all its daily dimensions. Along with the change in vision comes a technical and formal change; Since it is no longer a matter of recreating an imagined world in all its details, the brushstroke acquires impressionist ease, and the artists focus not so much on the expression of types and customs as on the faithful reflection of the atmosphere of the place, of the own identity of North African populations.
Bertuchi was trained in Granada, as a disciple of García Guerra and Larrocha, to later enter the School of Fine Arts. In 1895, at just eleven years old, he participated for the first time in an exhibition, and two years later he obtained the first award of his career. In 1899, at the age of fifteen and after his first trip to North Africa, Bertuchi presented three works in Granada and then moved to Madrid to continue his studies. That same year he performed in Madrid at the Biennial of the Círculo de Bellas Artes. Since the beginning of the century, Bertuchi has attended the exhibitions of the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid and also shows his work in Granada. In 1903, at the age of nineteen, he became a photojournalist of the Moroccan Civil War, making ten oil paintings on cardboard that were published in "The Spanish and American Illustration." In 1908 he returned to Malaga to make a series of paintings with a military theme.
