This work by Iñaki Bonillas is part of the project "Secrets", developed within the framework of the Estancia FEMSA artistic residency program, carried out at the Casa Estudio Luis Barragán in Mexico City. This program promoted interventions in the emblematic architectural space, bringing together works by prominent twentieth-century artists such as Bruce Nauman, Cildo Meireles and Franz Erhard Walther, among others.
Beyond belonging to one of Mexico's most internationally renowned artists, the piece has a remarkable historical value, as it documents and reveals subtle traces of wear and tear in the house of Luis Barragán, one of the most influential architects of the 20th century, whose works are considered part of the heritage of modern architecture worldwide. The series as exhibited at Art Basel 2020, reaffirming the dialogue between contemporary art, material memory and architectural legacy.
Iñaki Bonillas is a contemporary Mexican artist. His artistic proposal revolves mainly around photography, the processes that make it possible and his own family's photographic collections. Since the nineties he has established a relationship with photography in his plastic work. Similar to the aesthetics and conceptual practices of the sixties and seventies, Bonillas' work focuses on the photographic fact (the camera, the film, the shutter, the developing process, etc.), and then connects them with different non-photographic procedures. Bonillas brings together elements that a priori would seem incompatible: on the one hand, a personal, biographical narrative, made up of anecdotes and notes of a private nature and, on the other, a sense of compilation and classification. In Mexico, Bonillas is represented by the Kurimanzutto gallery. Exhibitions of the artist have been held at La Virreina Centre de la Imatge, Barcelona, the Basel Art Museum, The Galleries at Moore, Philadelphia, Punctum, Salzburger Kunstverein Salzburg, the Sao Paulo Biennial, the Museo Amparo, Puebla, and the Musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris / ARC. In 2014 he carried out Words & Photos, a project for the Dia Art Foundation website (New York).10 In 2016 he made an intervention work to the Casa Luis Barragán called Secretos.1 In 2017 he presented the project Like sparrows around a pool of water at Zona Maco Sur. In 2016, he won the Zona Maco Contemporary Art Fair Award.11 In 2017, he presented the project Like sparrows around a pool of water at Zona Maco South.
