This book consists of two sections: the production of goldsmiths from Germanic countries and the gilt bronze settings produced in large numbers by French bronze makers.

Pierre Kjellberg (1922- Paris, 2014) was a French art historian. The son of an auctioneer who, like him, worked at the auction house of Edmond Champetier de Ribes. From 1956 to 1986, he was editor of the magazine Connaissance des arts. He published numerous articles in the Gazette de l'Hôtel Drouot and was the author of several books on art history.
