In this work, Steinberg constructs an imaginary landscape of marked poetic dimension, articulated through broad washes of blue, gray, ochre, and black. The composition is organized into broad horizontal bands: a luminous, almost empty sky occupies most of the paper, while the lower section features a dark, watery landscape, traversed by tonal variations that suggest depth and distance. In the foreground are three small, isolated figures, reduced almost to silhouettes. Their diminutive scale in contrast to the vastness of the space reinforces the sense of silence, strangeness, and contemplation.

Two circular stamps disrupt the atmosphere like emblems or fictional celestial bodies. These stamped motifs, a frequent feature of his work since the late 1960s, transform administrative symbols into poetic and ambiguous elements.

The work brings together elements characteristic of Steinberg’s artistic language: the spontaneity of watercolor, drawing reduced to essential signs, and the use of stamps as artistic tools. The result oscillates between landscape, narrative, and conceptual reflection, subtly questioning the relationship between image, writing, identity, and representation.

Saul Steinberg was an American artist of Romanian origin. He settled in New York during World War II. He achieved international recognition through his contributions to *The New Yorker*, while also producing a wide range of drawings, paintings, prints, collages, and sculptures. His work, considered among the most distinctive in postwar art, combines humor, conceptual reflection, and a constant exploration of signs, identity, and the mechanisms of representation.

His work is held in major international institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington; the Art Institute of Chicago, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, and the Institut Valencià d’Art Modern (IVAM).
