LITA CABELLUT (Sariñena, Huesca, 1961).
"Child", 2004
Mixed media on canvas.
Signed, and dated on the back.
Measurements: 120 x 120 cm.
Lita Cabellut offers us a monumental portrait whose aesthetics oscillates between attraction and figuration. The represented face completely occupies the entire canvas, in an elegant, slow but energetic way, with eyes that look completely at the viewer, as if wanting to convey the grief and grief that emanates from within. The composition, simple in terms of content but complex in terms of technique, colors and shapes used, continues Cabellut's own style, a tremendously expressive style that has led the Spanish to be one of the most sought-after artists internationally .
With a gypsy origin, Lita Cabellut was born in the small town of Sariñena, in Huesca, in a family with severe dysfunctionalities. Abandoned by her parents, she was raised by her grandmother, in the city of Barcelona. Las Ramblas, La Boquería market, Port Vell and Plaza Real, places filled with outsiders, artists and celebrities at the time but also tourists, were the scene of his childhood, marked by dyslexia and need sometimes to beg. The death of her grandmother, when she was only ten years old, led to her internment in an orphanage, where, at thirteen, she was adopted by a high-class Catalan family. The painting by Goya, Velázquez, Ribera and Rembrandt, discovered on visits to the Prado Museum, revealed her artistic vocation and, in 1978, the artist made her first exhibition, at the Masnou City Hall. In 1982 he moved to the Netherlands, together with his family, where he studied, with a scholarship, at the Gerrit Rietveld art academy, until 1984. The painting of the great Dutch baroque masters was essential in the construction of his art, not so much as far as style and technique are concerned. The artist works both oil on canvas and paper drawing, sculpture, photography, visual poem or video art. Sometimes his works assume some aspects of the Italian "cool buon", or add to his oils a crackle effect that produces a strong visual, plastic impact. Portraits abound in his work, where the strong influence of Rembrandt, Francis Bacon or Jackson Pollock can be verified, all of them characterized by the expressiveness of the line and the disfigurement of reality, seeking to reflect the internal tearing of their models. Reflecting the violence, the squalor, the cruelty, which are sometimes hidden under a superficial layer of glamor, under an evanescent and ephemeral beauty, is one of its main objectives.
