In this work René-Louis Chrétien uses a language of impressionist heritage to approach a traditional theme in art since the baroque, the still life. However, the approach to the subject is totally modern; the space disappears and the objects are deliberately placed on a background formed by pure spots of color.
Although a painter especially of still lifes, René-Louis Chrétien also produced landscapes, genre scenes and some portraits. He first trained with his father and later studied with Léon Bonnat, Gustave Boulanger and Jules-Élie Delaunay. He showed his work repeatedly at the Salon, where he won numerous medals and awards. He exhibited in Brussels in 1910 and continued at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1940. Today his work can be found in museums in France and New Zealand.
