Created in 1934, this glazed stoneware bowl is a magnificent example of the artistic exploration of Axel Salto, one of the great innovators of 20th-century European ceramics. The piece features a slightly conical circular shape, enhanced by a characteristic relief of concentric grooves that run across the surface, creating a powerful rhythmic and organic effect. The blue glaze accentuates the depth of the textures, revealing the artist’s interest in the relationship between material, form, and nature. Probably created during the early years of his collaboration with Royal Copenhagen, this piece belongs to a series developed between approximately 1932 and 1936, a pivotal period in the consolidation of Salto’s ceramic language.
Trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Axel Salto began his career as a painter within Danish modernist circles, contributing to the influential magazine *Klingen* (1917–1920). After a stay in Paris, where he came into contact with the European avant-garde and figures such as Picasso and Matisse, he gradually shifted his focus to ceramics, a medium in which he would achieve extraordinary artistic maturity. Beginning in 1925, he collaborated with major Danish manufacturers such as Bing & Grøndahl and, starting in 1933, with Royal Copenhagen, developing an unmistakable style based on sculptural forms, tactile surfaces, and a deep inspiration drawn from the growth processes of nature.
