"Adoration of the Magi".
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 37 cm (diameter); 45 cm (frame diameter).
In this copper surely destined to the private devotion we see the adoration of the Magi, with a composition of classic type closed in the sides by architecture of classic type and open to landscape in the center of the scene. The main figures are mostly in the foreground and with a skillful work of lights, which highlight the white figures, almost pearly, of the Virgin and Child. Next to them, favoring a triangular composition, are the Magi, each one of them with his offering. In the background, St. Joseph observes the scene, leaning on the column. Finally, in the background we can appreciate the presence of several other characters who are probably the pages of the kings. in the account of the Gospel of Matthew (2:1-12). It symbolizes the recognition of Jesus as the King and Savior of the world, not only by the Jews, but also by the gentiles, represented in the diversity of the Magi. During the Baroque and late Renaissance, this theme acquired great relevance, as it allowed artists to deploy a rich chromatic palette and exhibit their mastery in the representation of fabrics, jewels and exotic characters.
This piece is part of the Italian school that takes its references from Greco-Latin classicism and the Renaissance of the early sixteenth century. His style is based on the study of natural truth without abandoning a certain idealization.
