The work is part of the widespread influence that El Greco’s style had on 17th-century Spanish painting, particularly in the Toledo region. The composition follows the type of isolated apostolic figure that the master developed in his famous Apostles: a figure depicted in three-quarter profile against a dark, undefined background, whose expressive intensity is concentrated on the face, the hands, and the chromatic contrast of the garments.

The figure can be identified as Saint John the Evangelist due to his youthful, beardless appearance, elongated face, and the combination of bluish and reddish tones—elements associated with the iconographic type used by El Greco to depict the apostle. The absence of the chalice with the serpent or dragon—one of his customary attributes—suggests that the painting should not be associated with a specific version by the master, although the formal connection to his models is evident. The gesture of the raised hand and the direction of the gaze contribute to that restrained spirituality characteristic of works in the El Greco style.

Formally, the striking stylization of the face, the large almond-shaped eyes, and the hands with long, slender fingers stand out. The high quality of the execution is particularly evident in the rendering of the face and hands, as well as in the modeling of the broad folds of the cloak, created through strong hallmarks of light and shadow that lend volume and movement to the figure. The blue and red stand out intensely against the earthy background, reinforcing the figure’s monumental presence. The execution translates El Greco’s artistic language into a more restrained style, characteristic of the dissemination and reinterpretation of his models during the 17th century.

Doménikos Theotokópoulos, known as El Greco, was initially trained in Crete within the Byzantine tradition and later worked in Venice and Rome before settling in Toledo in 1577. There he developed a deeply personal artistic language, characterized by the stylization of figures, the expressive use of color, and an intense spiritual dimension. His religious compositions—and particularly the “Apostolados” from his late period—exerted a notable influence on Toledo and Spanish painting in the decades that followed.
