The work that concerns us belongs to a type of pictorial work with which Eugène Deshayes gained notable recognition in the cultural circles of the moment. The author shows a panoramic view full of iridescent earthy and sienna colors. It is a rugged landscape, with a landscape framing, which denotes a masterful use of light. He emphasizes the textures and the sharp profile of the bare rocks; he captures the roughness of the terrain and extracts lyricism from that silent atmosphere. The painting, rather than representing a specific place, evokes a sense of the immensity of nature.
Eugène Deshayes studied plastic arts at the School of Fine Arts in Algeria, as well as being part of the renowned Barbizon school thanks to his scenic landscapes. During the years 1848 and 1867, Deshayes exhibited his works regularly at the Paris Salon, obtaining great recognition and success for his small and delicate landscapes, which came to be compared with those of Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and Eugène Boudin. His style is characterized by a combination of realism and romanticism, where natural scenes are portrayed with great detail and a focus on atmosphere and light. Some of his most important works are displayed in institutions such as the Louvre Museum or the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
