Bowl. Nishapur. Persia, 9th-10th centuries.
Glazed ceramic.
Presents restored fractures.
Measurements: 20 cm. diameter.
Glazed ceramic bowl from Nishapur, one of the most prominent enclaves of Persian ceramics of the Islamic Golden Age, especially in the ninth and tenth centuries. It is decorated with kufic inscriptions in dark brown on a cream background.
During the Islamic Golden Age, Nishapur (Khorasan Razavi province, northeastern Iran) was one of the great centers of ceramics and related arts. Most of the pottery discovered in Nishapur is preserved in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and in museums in Tehran and Mashhad. This pottery shows connection with Sassanid and Central Asian art.
