This piece, originally from China at the beginning of the 20th century, is a remarkable example of sculptural work in ivory. It is a carved tusk representing an elaborate procession of figures in festive attitudes. The figures, delicately arranged along the natural curve of the tusk, exhibit great detail in their clothing, gestures and attributes, suggesting a high degree of technical virtuosity. It has touches of ink to accentuate details and depths of the relief, generating a three-dimensional effect that highlights the narrative dynamism of the scene.
The work rests on a finely carved wooden base designed not only as a functional support, but also as an aesthetic complement. Such carvings, aimed at the local market and international collectors, exemplify the dialogue between craft tradition and commercial demand during the late Qing dynasty and the early years of the Republic of China.
