This large Japanese dish from the Meiji period (c. 1900) is a remarkable example of the decorative refinement achieved by Japanese porcelain in the transition to modernity. Made of finely hand-painted porcelain, it features a dense and rhythmic composition of stylized floral motifs, arranged in a meticulous weave that completely covers the surface of the plate.
The decoration, of marked organic symmetry, combines red, gold and brown tones on an ivory background, creating a vibrant and harmonious visual effect. The precisely delineated flowers, leaves and fruits reveal the influence of the Japanese taste for repetitive patterns (komon) and the evocation of nature as a source of aesthetic balance.
The use of gold and iron red, characteristic of the Imari and Kutani palette, reflects the technical sophistication achieved in the porcelain workshops of the Meiji era, when traditional craftsmanship was adapted to the new international circuits of exhibition and trade.
