Measurements: 165.5 x 217 cm.
Japanese folding screen from the Taishō period, featuring an evocative boat ride through a spectacular river landscape. The boat, occupied by a group of travelers and steered by several boatmen, moves through churning waters and monumental rock formations covered in vegetation. The composition stands out particularly for the power with which nature is depicted: free and expressive brushstrokes shape the rocks, while the whirlpools and white crests of the water lend movement and drama to the scene. The restrained palette of grays, blues, and greens creates an immersive atmosphere, enriched by the delicate rendering of the figures. The small scale of the figures against the vastness of the surroundings accentuates the majestic and almost sublime character of the landscape.
