Han-era terracotta funerary figure, known as a “stickman” due to the elongated and schematic stylization of the body. The piece depicts a standing male warrior or attendant, with a narrow torso, long legs, a head modeled with serene features, and arms that were originally articulated or added—now lost—as is typical for this type of figure.

During the Han Dynasty, the tombs of the elite were accompanied by numerous mingqi—funerary objects and figures intended to reproduce the deceased’s rank, service, and surroundings in the afterlife. These included soldiers, servants, musicians, animals, and miniature architecture, forming authentic sets of symbolic accompaniments.

This specimen stands out for its marked verticality, its simplified anatomy, and the delicacy of the face, with its restrained expression and softly modeled features. The nudity of the body reflects a typology in which the figures may have originally been dressed in fabrics, armor, or perishable elements that have not survived, which explains the simplification of the torso and the presence of side holes for the placement of arms.

Given its chronology, format, and function, it constitutes a compelling testament to Han funerary sculpture and to the importance ancient China placed on the symbolic continuity of life after death.
