Artist of self-taught formation, Joan Pijoan celebrated in 1974 his first individual exhibition, in the Sala Canuda of Barcelona. That same year he obtained the Prize of the Provincial Delegation of Painting, and the following year he repeated his presence in two other rooms of the same city, Simón and K. In 1979 he became known in Madrid. He will also participate in several group exhibitions in Barcelona, among them the one held at Els Quatre Gats in 1983, and in the Biennial of Art of the F.C. Barcelona. After an initial stage of experimentation in the field of matter painting, his work evolved towards approaches similar to those of Mark Rothko, with large and intense chromatic spaces sometimes disturbed by brief pigmented areas in contrast to the dominant tonality.
