The "E136" sideboard, designed in 1958 by Carlos Picardo for Darro, is an emblematic piece of post-war Spanish modern design. Its aesthetic is characterized by a rigorous formal refinement, where each element responds to a functional logic without sacrificing elegance. The furniture has a balanced horizontal structure, with sober proportions and great visual presence. Wood becomes the protagonist material, worked with precision to highlight its natural grain. The straight lines, smooth fronts and absence of superfluous ornamentation reflect a clear influence of European rationalism, adapted to a more artisanal context. One of the highlights of the E136 model is its careful resolution of details: integrated handles, well-organized storage systems and a base that visually lightens the volume.
Carlos Picardo was a key figure in the development of modern furniture in Spain during the mid-20th century. His work for Darro came at a time of transition, when the country was beginning to open up to international influences after years of isolation. Picardo knew how to interpret the currents of the Modern Movement, incorporating principles such as functionality, material honesty and structural clarity. However, his work maintains its own identity, linked to the Spanish cabinetmaking tradition and a taste for warm, refined finishes. Founded in Madrid in the 1950s, Darro became one of the most relevant firms in contemporary Spanish design.
