DESCRIPTION
Andalusian capital "de moñas" or "de castanets", probably from Seville, late 15th century.
Carved marble.
Measurements: 20 x 30 x 30 cm.
Square section capital carved with two rows of fleshy volutes in high relief. A molded cornice tops, as usual, the truncated pyramidal structure.
This type of capital, nicknamed "de moñas" or "de castanets" because of the shapes given to its volutes, was very common in palaces, cloisters of convents, stately homes, etc. in Seville at the time. Its forms are the result of a modification and stylization of the classical composite order (which, in turn, is the result in the Roman Empire of the mixture between the Ionic volutes and the acanthus leaves of the Corinthian order).
