This baptismal font, made in carved limestone during the 19th century, responds stylistically to the revival of Gothic art, characteristic of nineteenth-century historicism. Its octagonal shape refers to the traditional solutions used in the original Gothic period, evoking the symbolism of the number eight, associated with spiritual rebirth through the sacrament of baptism.
The piece, although fragmentary and with visible material losses in its rim and decorative surface, preserves enough elements to appreciate its formal language. The cup has a shallow, concave central vessel, intended to contain the lustral water. Its faceted and molded contour provides a subtle visual dynamism, which is echoed in the lower decorative band. The latter, despite the deterioration, allows us to identify an openwork decoration of vegetal character, possibly vine leaves or interlaced motifs, typical of the late Gothic ornamental repertoire.
The treatment of the stone reveals a sober but careful execution, with attention to the volumes and rhythm of the relief. The imperfections and wear only accentuate the historical character of the work, which should not be read as a simple reproduction, but as a nineteenth-century interpretation of the medieval language, linked to the rise of ecclesiastical neo-Gothic promoted by the movements of liturgical restoration in Europe.
In short, this baptismal font is a material testimony to the romantic interest in the medieval past that permeated much of the sacred art of the nineteenth century, reflecting both the survival of Gothic forms and the search for a spirituality more closely linked to the historical roots of Christianity.
