The depiction of the head of St. John the Baptist reflects one of the most powerful iconographic themes in Christian art, associated with the saint’s martyrdom and his role as the forerunner of Christ. The sculptural treatment reveals the importance placed in the Spanish tradition on polychromy as an essential element of religious imagery. The combination of carved wood, gilding, and polychromy lends visual richness and expressive depth, while the glass paste eyes intensify the effect of lifelike presence—one of the most characteristic techniques of Spanish sculpture for establishing an emotional connection between the image and the faithful.
