Francesco Algarotti was an Italian writer, essayist, art collector, philosopher, poet and polymath. A representative figure of Enlightenment thought, he showed a clear admiration for British culture and was distinguished by a vast erudition that ranged from Newtonianism to architecture and music. He maintained intellectual relations with some of the most relevant personalities of his time, such as Voltaire, Jean-Baptiste Boyer d'Argens, Pierre Louis Moreau de Maupertuis and Julien Offray de La Mettrie. Among his numerous correspondents were Lord Chesterfield, Thomas Gray, George Lyttelton, Thomas Hollis, Metastasius, Pope Benedict XIV, Heinrich von Brühl and Frederick II of Prussia.
