Federico García Lorca is one of the most representative figures of 20th century Spanish literature. His theater, with deep poetic roots, is characterized by the fusion of popular, symbolic and tragic elements, becoming one of the most influential contributions of contemporary drama.
The present copy corresponds to the first edition of Mariana Pineda, published in 1928 by the publishing house Moderna, in Santiago de Chile. This edition is of notable bibliographical interest, not only because of its early date of publication, but also because of its Spanish-American provenance, which testifies to the rapid international dissemination of Lorca's work during the author's lifetime. The importance of this volume is reinforced by the fact that Laurenti and Siracusacitan this edition as the first known, which gives it an additional value within the textual history of the work. This reference has contributed to its consideration as a relevant testimony in the bibliographical studies dedicated to García Lorca and to the fixation of the first editions of his theater.
Mariana Pineda, inspired by the historical figure of the Granada heroine executed in 1831, is an exaltation of the ideals of freedom and an early example of Lorca's poetic theater. In it, the author constructs a tragedy in which the historical merges with the lyrical, giving the character a symbolic dimension that transcends the political context of the play.
