DESCRIPTION

Buffet of later period.

Writing desk, made in Augsburg during the first half of the 17th century. Built in conifer as structural support, the furniture displays on its façade an intricate marquetry of stained wood, oak, lemongrass and fruit trees, which make up a complex decorative program of fantastic architectures, classical ruins, human figures and symbolic motifs, all treated with an almost pictorial meticulousness. This type of decoration, deeply influenced by Mannerist taste, reveals the period's fascination with the imaginary, the erudite and the exotic, and highlights the high level of specialization of the Augsburg workshops, where Flemish, Italian and local influences converged. The original structure of the desk rises above a buffet of a later period, the incorporation of which respects the formal dignity of the whole. The turned salomonic legs, of harmonious robustness and elaborate workmanship, lend a majestic air without breaking the visual balance with the upper part. The bronze handles, discreet but elegant, accentuate the functionality of each compartment without distracting attention from the marquetry decoration. As a whole, the piece is an outstanding testimony to princely collecting and Central European material culture, in which furniture not only fulfilled a utilitarian function, but also became an object of contemplation, a cabinet of wonders that synthesized art, technique and knowledge.
