Jean Gauthier was a leading figure in the art glass design and manufacturing scene in France during the height of the Art Deco movement. His career began in Paris, with a first workshop located at 12-14 rue Jean Robert, an address that would eventually become a signature symbolic of his work. As his production grew, Gauthier expanded his operations with additional factories in the town of Ézanville, on the outskirts of the capital.
During the years immediately following World War I, Gauthier was primarily engaged in the production of cameo-like glass lampshades, some of which bore the direct signature of "Gauthier," reflecting a more artisanal and personalized approach in its early days.
However, it was in the 1920s when it consolidated its artistic identity by specializing in the production of mold-pressed glass, a technique that allowed for greater standardization without sacrificing the aesthetic value of its pieces. Within this context, Gauthier adopted two main commercial signatures: E.J.G., an acronym for Établissements Jean Gauthier, and J. Robert, in homage to the street where his first workshop was located. Both brands appear frequently on his Art Deco glass objects, and became synonymous with quality and innovative design.
