DESCRIPTION

English bureau bookcase. George III period, ca. 1760-70.
In mahogany wood.
Measurements: 248 x 120 x 56 cm.

This imposing piece of furniture from the George III period is an exceptional example of British cabinetmaking in the 18th century, when mahogany became the wood of choice for the most important pieces. The nobility of the material, with its silky grain, its density and its deep, warm tone, gives the whole a solemn elegance that is enhanced by the purity of its lines and the harmony of its proportions.

The structure responds to the classic model of the Georgian bookcase bureau, conceived both for writing and for the archiving and safekeeping of documents. At the top, the split pediment stands out, a very characteristic feature of early neoclassical taste, which gives an architectural air to the piece of furniture. Below it are two large doors that reveal a sophisticated interior, organized in numerous compartments. The complexity of this interior layout, executed with millimetric precision, is a palpable testimony to the workmanship of a high-quality workshop.

The desk area, with a hinged top covered in original or period leather, displays a small universe of drawers, niches and carved columns, in the English tradition of luxury bureaus. Every detail of this section, from the discreet carving to the delicate profiles of the fronts, reflects a balance between sobriety and refinement typical of the best Georgian style.
