Renaissance style chest, made in Italy during the XVI century and later, is a piece of furniture that reflects the survival and reinterpretation of the classical models of the Italian Renaissance. Executed in carved wood, the work stands out for the ornamental richness of its fronts and for the careful architectural structuring of the whole.
From the stylistic point of view, the work is part of the Italian Renaissance tradition, marked by the recovery of the classical world and the influence of ancient sculpture. The precision in the modeling of the figures, as well as the use of frames and moldings that structure the reliefs, evidence a knowledge of the decorative repertoires spread by the Italian workshops of the sixteenth century. The mention of a "later" execution suggests the continuity of this style in subsequent centuries, when the Renaissance was reinterpreted and reproduced as a model of prestige and tradition.
In their original context, this type of chest served a dual function: practical and symbolic. They served as storage furniture for textiles, documents or valuable objects, and at the same time as representative elements within noble rooms, where the carved decoration reinforced the social status of their owners.
