José Gutiérrez Solana was a Spanish painter, engraver and writer. His work is characterized by a critical and somber vision of Spanish society, with themes such as death, popular religiosity, parties, prostitution and marginality. Influenced by expressionism and baroque tenebrism, he developed a personal style of great expressive force. He was also the author of literary texts in which he portrayed with crudeness and detail the life of the Spain of his time. He participated in the gathering of the Café de Pombo and exhibited in Madrid and Paris. His work, initially rejected, gained international recognition and today is part of important collections.
