Bartolomeo Bimbi was a still life and animal painter trained under the tutelage of Lorenzo Lippi, Angelo Gori and Onorio Marinari. He was commissioned to paint large canvases of flora and fauna for the Villa Medici dell'Ambrogiana and della Topaia, now preserved in the Pitti Palace and the Botanical Museum of the University. His work is preserved in the Uffizi Gallery, among other important institutions. In this case the presence of the rooster gives a narrative sense to the scene.
