We see in this canvas the representation of a "kermesse", Dutch term that designates the popular peasant parties typical of the Netherlands. It is a theme popularized by David Teniers the Elder (1582-1649), who treated it with a healthy sense of humor that will enjoy a long life among genre painters both in Flanders and Holland. With the representation of these popular festivities Teniers departs from the aesthetics and certain compositional schemes of Jan Brueghel "the Elder", repeating the same idyllic vision of the peasant world, also widely used by the Flemish literature of the time. Materialized in the representation of the Kermes or Kermesse, which is the name given to neighborhood festivals with food and drink stands, where games of skill, children's games, raffles and artistic numbers are performed.
