DESCRIPTION
Spanish school; end of the XVIII century.
"The trinity".
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 64 x 44 cm; 72 x 51 cm (frame).
On an indeterminate background that is barely visible due to the large size of the figures, a detail that gives them greater prominence, the three protagonists of the work are located. In the center, immersed in light, the dove of the Holy Spirit. To the left, showing signs of the Passion, Christ, with a red mantle. On the right, God the Father, resting one of his arms on the orb and holding a staff of command.
Spanish painting is one of the most authentic and personal examples of our art, because its conception and its form of expression arose from the people and the deepest feelings that nestled in it. With the economy of the State broken, the nobility in decline and the high clergy burdened with heavy taxes, it was the monasteries, the parishes and the confraternities of clerics and laymen who promoted its development, the works sometimes being financed by popular subscription. Thus, painting was forced to capture the prevailing ideals in these environments, which were none other than the religious ones.
