This work that immortalizes the effigy of Emperor Claudius is part of the rich tradition of historical portraiture that, during the Baroque, sought to reconcile classical scholarship and political power. More than a mere effigy, the canvas proposes a symbolic construction of Roman imperial power filtered through the artistic sensibility of seicentesque Italy.
The sitter appears in profile, following a model inherited from numismatics and ancient Roman sculpture. This resource is not accidental: the profile refers to authority, to the permanence of the image of the ruler in the collective memory and to the idea of historical continuity. The laurel wreath, a classic attribute of victory, honor and legitimacy, reinforces the identification of the character with the ideal of the emperor as a civilizing figure.
