Probably conceived as part of a series dedicated to the four elements, this composition depicts Earth—understood as a symbol of fertility, abundance, and prosperity—through an elegant courtly scene set against an idyllic, Arcadian-inspired landscape. The work fully embodies the Rococo style that permeated much of the European artistic production of the century. The composition is organized with remarkable balance, integrating the main scene into a sweeping landscape that fades into a delicate atmospheric perspective. The lightness of the drawing, the richness of the chromatic nuances, and the luminosity of the surface reveal an execution of great refinement, particularly commendable given that it is an oil-on-glass painting—a highly complex technique that demands rigorous planning and absolute mastery of the medium, since the painting is executed on the reverse side of the support and in the reverse order of conventional painting.
In the foreground, a young peasant girl receives a bouquet of flowers from a gardener, whose tools—the rake, the shovel, and the flowerpots overflowing with flowers—directly allude to the cultivation of the land and agricultural labor as the source of natural wealth. Of particular interest is the figure of the little Cupid, barely hinted at in the left background, shooting a luminous arrow. His presence transforms the genre scene into an allegory.
Paintings under glass were widely popular among European elites due to their technical refinement and unique lighting effects. Their glossy surface intensifies the vibrancy of the colors and endows the compositions with a particularly attractive luminosity, a quality that made these works highly prized for decorating cabinets, salons, and aristocratic residences.
