DESCRIPTION
After RAFAEL DE SANZIO (Urbino, 1483 - Rome, 1520), early 19th century.
"Sistine Madonna".
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 78 x 66 cm; 110 x 99 x 8,5 cm (frame).
The canvas in tender focuses its attention on the face of the Virgin and Child of the Sistine Madonna by Raphael, trying to recreate vividly both the Virgin and the Child. The original canvas of the Virgin, the Child Jesus, Saint Sixtus and Saint Barbara is characterized by the imaginary space created by the figures themselves, who are standing on a bed of clouds, surrounded by an open curtain (in our work, only the neutral background is visible). The figure of the Virgin conveys the sensation of descending from the celestial space to the physical world. It is believed that the painting was intended to decorate the tomb of Pope Julius II, as Saint Sixtus was the patron saint of the Della Rovere family and Saint Barbara and the two angels (in the lower part of the canvas) symbolize the funeral ceremony.
