This painting represents a scene of popular education, located in a rural school of the early nineteenth century. In the center of the composition is the teacher, an already old man, of humble aspect, dressed with red vest, clear jacket and stockings. He holds in his hand a rod or pointer, symbol of discipline and pedagogical authority of the time. His gaze is serious and concentrated. Around him are grouped several students, who adopt different attitudes: one with his hands in his pockets seems to be the center of the teacher's attention; another child, on the floor, shows an expression of discomfort or fear. In the background, several students observe the scene with curiosity, some laughing or amused, adding an almost picaresque tone to the composition.

Joseph Hornung, whose family was of German shepherd origin, was born in Geneva. He served an apprenticeship as an engraver of watch cases and trained as a self-taught painter. He devoted himself mainly to portraiture and genre subjects. He is sometimes considered the official painter of the Reformation. He was a member of the cantonal legislature of Geneva from 1836 (Representative Council and, from 1842, Grand Council).
