The painting represents a scene of gallant character typical of the XIX century, in which a couple appears seated on a bench in an intimate and relaxed attitude. The man embraces the woman, putting his arm around her while with the other hand he rests a guitar on the floor.
This type of representation is part of the gallant painting, a genre widespread in the nineteenth century that recovers the eighteenth-century tradition of Rococo, but adapting it to the bourgeois taste of the time. Its relevance lies in the fact that it reflects the social and aesthetic ideals of a new wealthy class, which seeks in art images of pleasure, leisure, idealized love and refined daily life. During the 19th century, this type of scenes had a great commercial success, since it responded to the taste for the decorative and sentimental. In addition, it functioned as an idealized reflection of social relationships, where love was shown in a kind, restrained and aesthetic way.
