Eliseo Meifrén made seascapes one of the most fruitful areas of his artistic exploration, focusing on Mediterranean light as well as atmospheric changes and the movement of the waves. In this composition with a distinctly panoramic format, the artist departs from the serenity of the harbor to depict a choppy sea, in which a boat struggles to stay on course against a rocky coastline dominated by a lighthouse.
The low horizon line lends great expansiveness to the sky, rendered in grays, whites, and bluish tones applied with loose, sweeping brushstrokes. Against this unstable atmosphere, the splashes surrounding the lighthouse stand out—two accents that intensify the drama without resorting to anecdotal storytelling. The vast space separating the two elements reinforces the ship’s sense of isolation and vulnerability.
The sea is rendered through successive bands of oblique, broken brushstrokes. The whites of the foam blend with ochres, greens, and grays, avoiding a uniform depiction of the surface and conveying the shifting energy of the waves. The boat, slightly listing, acts as a focal point of tension within a composition dominated by movement, while the lighthouse introduces a point of stability in the face of the storm’s fury.
A landscape and seascape painter, Meifrén was one of the first artists to incorporate Impressionist techniques into Catalan painting. Trained at the Llotja in Barcelona and later in Paris, he developed an international career focused on landscapes, harbors, rivers, and coastlines—subjects he interpreted with an increasingly free brushstroke and a special sensitivity to the effects of light and atmosphere. His work is represented at the Museo Nacional del Prado, which holds ten of the artist’s paintings, the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, and the Museu Marítim de Barcelona.
