Julio Argüelles was, besides painter, sculptor and president of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Our Lady of the Rosary. He spent a good part of his youth in León, where he lived with the artistic environment of the place and held his first exhibition at the age of 16. Later he would go to study in Madrid, where he would study Nautical Studies, later dedicating himself to the merchant navy for two decades. Despite this professional dedication, the world of art would always be present in his life and, once he retired, he would devote himself fully to painting, achieving notable public and critical success with his landscapes and seascapes. He would also create monumental sculptures, some of them for public spaces, commissioned by the public administration. In 1976 he was named a full member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and in 1988 he became president.
