Joan Fluvià was formed in the study of the postimpressionists and the "fauves", being especially decisive in his formation the influence of who was his teacher in Paris in 1945, Raoul Dufy. He developed a painting that frees itself from the immediate reality through lyricism and sensual feeling of matter, and became known through exhibitions and competitions, among the latter the Venice Biennale of 1960. An active participant in Barcelona's cultural life, Fluvià was director and advisor of the El Jardí gallery, and in 1957 he organized an important exhibition of Rouault. He was also founder of the Associació d'Artistes Actuals and the Saló de Maig.
