DESCRIPTION

JOSEP GUINOVART (Barcelona, 1927 - 2007).
Untitled.
Mixed media on paper adhered to board.
Signed in the lower left corner.
Measurements: 51 × 65 cm.; 69 × 91 cm. with frame.

Work of material language and open construction, in which Josep Guinovart articulates the composition through broad forms, graphic signs and a sober palette of ochers, grays, blacks and earths. The piece combines areas of great pictorial density with lighter spaces, generating a tension between mass, emptiness and gesture.

The large dark form on the right, crossed by white lines, contrasts with the circular and almost architectural structure on the left, creating a dialogue between sign, object and visual memory. As usual in Guinovart, the surface is not understood as a simple support, but as an active field where matter, line and color build an image of symbolic resonances.

Guinovart was a key figure in Catalan art in the second half of the 20th century. His work, linked to informalism and material experimentation, always maintained a deep relationship with the land, the object, memory and materials. He is represented in institutions such as the MNAC, the MACBA, the Reina Sofia Museum and the Espai Guinovart in Agramunt.
