DESCRIPTION

ANDRÉS LARRAGA Y MONTANER (Valtierra, Navarre, 1862–Barcelona, 1931).
"Rural Landscape."
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 100 x 60 cm; 117.5 x 76 cm (frame).

This scene conveys an idealized and tranquil image of the rural world, where traditional architecture and the mountainous landscape create a space of memory, contemplation, and stillness. Andrés Larraga organizes the composition using a deep perspective, flanked by stone structures and traditional architecture. The facades, stone walls, staircase, roofs, and uneven ground are rendered with loose, Impressionist-style brushstrokes that suggest the texture of the materials without disrupting the atmospheric unity of the whole.

Andrés Larraga y Montaner began his artistic training in Barcelona as a student of Josep Armet, a landscape painter associated with the tradition of Martí Alsina and the Barbizon School. His early works reflected a romantic style of landscape painting, with echoes of Millet, before his stay in Paris beginning in 1886 allowed him to become acquainted with the work of Berthe Morisot, Édouard Manet, and the Impressionist sensibility. He alternated his travels with stays in Barcelona, where, in 1887, he participated in his first group exhibition at the Sala Parés. He exhibited regularly at that gallery, as well as at the Extraordinary Fine Arts Exhibitions in Barcelona and at the National Fine Arts Exhibition in Madrid in 1922. His works are housed in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts of Navarre.
