DESCRIPTION
Louis XVI clock. France, ca. 1770.
Ormolu gilded bronze and white marble.
Measurements: 42 x 37 x 14 cm.
This table clock has a marble base ornamented with floral reliefs, spikes and winged angels, on which rests the clock itself. The structure rests on four small sphere-like legs. Leaning on this clock is a beautiful sculptural group starring Cupid on a cloud begging Venus to return. The decorativeness of the piece is enhanced by the beautiful gilded bronze work, as well as by the floral forms that complete the composition. Formally, the figuration is directly inspired by ancient classical art, a constant reference in the arts of this period.
