This wall clock, originally from France, is a testimony of the refinement and sophistication of the time. Its elongated and ornate design reflects the Napoleon III style, characterized by an abundance of details and a blend of classical and contemporary elements.
The watch case, made of wood, is richly ornamented with gilded bronze. Floral and vegetal motifs, typical of the style, are intertwined in a harmonious composition that frames the clock face and thermometer.
The circular watch face displays blue Roman numerals on white enamel, a classic feature of French watchmaking. The hands are delicately worked. At the top of the case, a mercury thermometer, protected by a crystal, indicates the ambient temperature.
The combination of watch and thermometer in the same piece is no coincidence. At a time when meteorological information was essential for agriculture, navigation and daily life, such clocks became valuable and appreciated objects.
This wall clock with thermometer is not only a measuring instrument, but also a work of art that reflects the taste and lifestyle of 19th century French high society.
