This pair of Sèvres-style goblets, made in France at the end of the 19th century, exemplifies the historicist taste characteristic of the period, when many French manufactures sought to emulate the technical and aesthetic prestige of the famous Manufacture de Sèvres. Executed in enameled and partially gilded porcelain, and enhanced with gilded bronze mounts, the pieces show rococo-inspired gallant scenes, framed by a meticulous ornamentation that combines deep enamels and gilded details of great refinement.
The Sèvres manufacture, founded in the 18th century and protected by the French crown, became a European benchmark for its mastery of color, especially the cobalt blue and Pompadour pink backgrounds, for the quality of its fire gilding and for the perfection of its bronze mounts. His influence extended throughout the 19th century, driving a production that took up Rococo and Neoclassicism motifs to satisfy a market eager for luxury and historical evocation. These goblets faithfully reproduce this decorative lexicon, from elegant forms to pastoral iconography, showing how the legacy of Sèvres continued to mark the aesthetic ideal of the French decorative arts at the height of eclecticism.
