DESCRIPTION
MARCELIANO SANTA MARIA (Burgos, 1866-Madrid, 1952).
"Allegorical scene".
Colored pencils on paper.
Signed in the lower left corner.
Measurements: 21 x 28 cm; 38 x 45 x 5 x 5 cm (frame).
This allegorical scene shows the mastery of academic drawing characteristic of Marceliano Santa María. The artist combines a firm and classic stroke with soft shades of colored pencil to model the feminine figure, while the centaur appears resolved with a lighter graphism. The composition, with symbolist and mythological roots, reveals the artist's interest in the human figure, anatomical studies and classically inspired scenes, such as the Rape of the Sabine Women (which inspires the bidding work).
Marceliano Santa María was an outstanding Spanish painter who specialized in Castilian landscape, portrait and history painting. He studied in Burgos, Madrid and Rome, where he consolidated a fully academic language. His prestige earned him numerous awards and teaching positions, and his work is represented in important Spanish museums.
