Benjamín Palencia was one of the fundamental figures of the Spanish artistic renovation of the 20th century and co-founder of the School of Vallecas together with the sculptor Alberto Sánchez. Considered heir to the landscape sensibility of the Generation of '98, he developed a profoundly poetic vision of the Castilian landscape, far removed from traditional naturalism. Self-taught through his visits to the Prado Museum, he rejected the official academic teaching and soon approached the European avant-garde. His stay in Paris in 1926 and his contact with artists such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró and Gargallo introduced cubist and surrealist influences in his work, as well as experimental and material techniques. After the Civil War, his painting evolved towards a language of great chromatic intensity and strong lyricism, focused on the essential and emotional representation of the Castilian landscape and Spanish rural life.
