BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

RICARD CANALS LLAMBÍ (Barcelona, 1876–1931).
"Night Encounter."
Charcoal, watercolor, and pastel on paper.
Signed in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 30 x 38.5 cm; 50 x 58 cm (frame).

In the work up for auction, Ricard Canals depicts a tumultuous scene of collective confrontation, in which several figures are shown clustered together in an intense struggle. The figures lean toward and grip one another in tense poses, creating a sense of abrupt and disorderly movement. Their flushed faces and confrontational gazes reinforce the impression of a scuffle in a nighttime setting illuminated by streetlamps.

His visual language is fully in keeping with the Modernist sensibility, which found in drawing a privileged medium for expressing the dynamism and elegance of contemporary life. Like other artists of his generation, Canals knew how to capture the pulse of a society in transformation, taking an interest in scenes of everyday life and in the depiction of characters with a naturalness and sophistication in keeping with the spirit of the Belle Époque.

Ricard Canals was a painter, draftsman, and printmaker associated with the Colla del Safrà, alongside Nonell, Mir, and Pichot. In 1897, he settled in Paris, where he exhibited successfully and worked for the art dealer Durand-Ruel, associating with artists from the Impressionist circle and with Pablo Picasso. In 1907, he returned permanently to Barcelona and served as president of the association Las Artes y los Artistas. From then on, he developed a body of work featuring Spanish themes, which was highly regarded in Paris, and he also distinguished himself as a portraitist. A significant portion of his work is preserved at the National Art Museum of Catalonia, as well as in collections such as the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum.
